Passionate about helping you lead an authentic life

Meet Jo

“I find these biography parts difficult to write, as it’s finding a balance between knowing a little about who I am as a person yet not too much. But, as with lots in life, the first step is to simply start!

I achieved a first class honours in Humanistic Counselling Practice from the University of Nottingham and after becoming an accredited professional with the National Counselling Society, I obtained my level 1, 2 and 3 training in EMDR Therapy.

Therapists have to attend regular supervision as part of their personal and professional development and I’m pleased to be a supervisee of Helen Lea who is an EMDR consultant in the UK”

“As for the more personal part of this bio, becoming a parent and wife initiated my path into therapy - firstly as a client and then as a change in career (all whilst navigating parenting and my own history with trauma). I’m not going to state that I like long walks (because I don’t), nor what my favourite type of film is or past time as I find it a bit cheesy on a therapists profile! Sorry colleagues.

However, it might be helpful to understand my lens on the world. Whilst in previous decades it may have been a condition of psychotherapy that the therapist is neutral or offers a blank screen of themselves, the fact is that every individual has their own inner working model which shapes their perceptions and biases. Myself included. I prefer to be upfront about them but fundamentally,

I believe every individual has worth and the potential to change.

We adapt and creatively adjust to the world around us and EMDR therapy is a route to finding a more harmonious, authentic and compassionate version of ourselves.

If you’d like to find out more about how I work as a psychotherapist and counsellor, or my experience in the field, you can find details on my therapy practice page at www.kemptowncounselling.co.uk. I do have social media accounts, which you’re welcome to follow me on, yet I rarely update them…

As for my CV or resume or list of qualifications, I’ve listed some below to give you a snapshot of how and where I invest in continuing professional development. It’s like a highlights reel, as my personal and professional development never stops!”

The experience part

I’ve never been great at being able to blow my own trumpet, so here is an awkward, whistle-stop tour of where I’ve condensed years of experience into several sentences. Yes, even therapists have personal work to undertake and mine is not to discount my achievements so here goes…

I’ve worked in private practice for 6 years and counting. I was an honorary psychotherapist within an NHS service, offering short-term therapy to NHS Staff. I’ve also worked as volunteer counsellor for Pavilions FACT, which was a service that offered therapy to families and carers of substance users and before that I worked as a volunteer therapist at an inner city college.

I’m also the secretary of EMDR Sussex - a regional group of EMDR UK

Registered and accredited professional with The National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society (NCPS)(Membership NCS17-05586) which means I had to meet their experience and educational requirements. I continue to meet the conditions of my accreditation, with ongoing continual professional development, and abide by their Code of Ethics and standards. I’m also a member of EMDR UK, and currently engaged in their accreditation process.

I’m a member of European Studies for Trauma & Dissociation ESTD UK (European group of ISSTD) and the International Society for Maladaptive Daydreaming ISMD to support the breadth and depth of my clinical knowledge.

I hold an enhanced DBS.
